Automotive FAQ – LED lighting

General Information

What is Lumen?

Specifies the overall visible light output of a light source, which is emitted in all directions.

What is Candela?

Specifies the luminous flux, which is emitted into a certain direction.

What is Lux?

It is the measurement unit of illumination intensity. It specifies the luminous flux, which is emitted on a certain surface. At 1 lux e.g. the human eye can easily read a book.

What is IP?

The IP Code classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures.

What is ECE?

United Nations Economic Commision for Europe.

What is the Reference Number?

The reference number is a value that is related to the high beam headlight which is regulated in ECE R112. Every certified high beam headlight has a reference number marked on it either left or right to the E-mark sign. According to ECE R112 the sum of all reference numbers of high beam headlights attached to the car must not exceed a total of 100.

What is an E-Mark?

An E-Mark has to be put on a product if it fullfills at least one category of the ECE regulation. Example and explanation:

  • H: Halogen/LED
  • D: Xenon
  • C: Low beam
  • R: High beam
  • PL: Plastic lens
  • 2439: Approval number
  • Arrow left right: left- and right-hand driving
  • 30: Reference number
  • E4: Granted approval in Netherlands

LED Driving Lights

Can I install the driving light by myself?

The driving ligths can be installed by a technically skilled person. We recommend that people with no training have the installation done by a service centre.

My driving light mist up on the inside. Is this normal and what can I do to prevent it?

Since moisture can get into driving lights while driving in rain or when using a high-pressure jet at a car wash, slight misting of the driving lights is not considered to be a quality defect. The driving lights may also mist up during transitional weather. This should normally disappear after a short time by circulating air. A frequent cause of misted car lights is incorrect use of high-pressure jets while washing the car. We therefore recommend never directing the water jet directly at a driving light and keeping a distance of at least 30 cm from the car.

Do I have to consider special mounting regulations?

According to ECE regulations products need to be installed pairwise (national legislation may differ). There are no special mounting regulations on width and heigth, for pure high beam products. For products with position light, special mounting regulations apply (see user manual).

Can I wire the driving light directly to the corresponding light function?

The driving lights are fully ECE compliant and can therefore be directly wired to the corresponding light function.

Are the driving lights covered by any EMC test?

Yes, the driving lights are covered by ECE R10.

LED Working Lights

What is Lumen?

We therefore recommend never directing the water jet directly at a working light and keeping a distance of at least 30 cm from the car.

Do I have to consider special mounting regulations?

No special mounting regulations apply.

How do I have to wire the working lights?

The working lights need to be installed with a separate switch, they must not be directly wired to a light function of the car.

Are the working lights covered by any EMC test?

Yes, the working lights are covered by ECE R10.

LEDriving replacement lamps: LED retrofits

What are possible applications for LED retrofits?

Interior:

  • Dome light
  • Reading light
  • Dashboard light
  • Glove box light
  • Foot area light
  • Trunk light

Exterior (off-road only):

  • Position light
  • Turn indicator
  • Daytime Running Light
  • Fog Light
  • Door entry light
  • Tail light
  • Brake Light
  • License plate light

Why are exterior applications only allowed as off-road?

Even though the performance of high quality retrofits is very close to the one of traditional lamps, the products do not have an ECE certification which is mandatory for exterior applications. The reason for the non existing approval is the difference in construction in comparison to existing incandescent light sources. Therefore the installation and usage of products without ECE certification leads to an expiration of the operating license and the insurance coverage.

Together with other members of the lighting industry, OSRAM is continuously working to achieve an adaption of the current ECE regulation in order to be able to offer street legal products.

The bordcomputer displays an error message about a broken lamp even though it works?

Some cars have a so-called "outage detection system" for light sources. This system checks the function of the lights in the form of electric impulses. As LEDs have a lower power consumption than conventional lamps, the outage detection system could report them as “defect”.

In case that you notice this error in your vehicle, we recommend the use of OSRAM LEDriving Canbus Control Unit.

How can I install a LED retrofit?

The base of all OSRAM LED retrofits is conform to EC standards. Therefore the old lamp simply has to be replaced by the LED retrofit. Please be aware that LED retrofits can be used for interior applications only. In exterior applications they may be used off-road only.

Which color should be used for which application?

For exterior applications, customers are required to use red LEDriving Retrofit behind red or clear lenses, such as braking light. LEDriving Retrofits in yellow color are used in terms of exterior application behind yellow or clear lenses such as turn indicators. Similar for LEDriving Retrofits in cool white, they can be used for clear lenses, e.g. fog lamp.

Note: OFF-ROAD only when used in an exterior application. These products do not have ECE approval. This means that they cannot be fitted in exterior lights if the vehicle is to be used on public roads.

For interior applications, you are free to choose the color.

What are the benefits of buying OSRAM LEDriving Products?

Along with the purchase of LEDriving products, you get benefits that you only find at OSRAM:

  • CW = Cool White ( 6.000K )
  • WW = Warm White (4.000 K)
  • BL = Blue
  • GR = Green
  • R = Red
  • YE = Amber

The headlights can be replaced by a technically skilled person. Ideally, the spoiler should be disassembled by two people. We recommend that people with no training have the conversion done by a service centre.

Are any special tools required for the conversion?

No special tool is needed. All screws and fittings can be loosened using a Torx attachment, screwdriver, and spanner.

How can I take out the 10 pin fitting for the original headlight?

The fitting can be carefully levered out using a screwdriver.

Does the headlight need adjustment after installation?

The headlight light beam pattern must be checked by a service centre and adjusted if necessary.

Should I expect error messages in the on-board system after installation?

Replacing the headlights will not lead to error messages.

Additional 2 red wires are attached to the LEDriving XENARC Golf VI. Where do I connect these?

These wires must be connected to the positive terminal of the vehicle battery. Without connection, impaired function and error messages in the on-board computer may occur.

Do the headlights have a cornering light function?

The headlight does not have a cornering light function.

My headlights mist up on the inside. Is this normal and what can I do to prevent it?

Since moisture can get into headlights while driving in rain or when using a high-pressure jet at a car wash, slight misting of the headlights is not considered to be a quality defect. The headlights may also mist up during transitional weather. This should normally disappear after a short time by circulating air.

A frequent cause of misted car lights is incorrect use of high-pressure jets while washing the car. We therefore recommend never directing the water jet directly at a headlight and keeping a distance of at least 30 cm from the car.

Do the LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlights also work with customer-specific coding?

The LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlight electronics were designed and validated on vehicles with factory coding. OSRAM therefore cannot guarantee that the headlights will function correctly in vehicles with modified coding. We ask you to check and consider this before installing the headlights.

Can I install the LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlights in every VW Golf VI model?

The LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlights were designed according to the European car model of VW. This means that local adaptions of the manufacturers may have an impact on the functionality of the LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlights.

What is the difference between the three editions GTI, BLACK and CHROME of LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlights? Are there technical or only differences in terms of the design?

The only difference between the three versions BLACK, CHROME and GTI is the different bezel coating. From technical side all versions are identical.

Are there any differences of the LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlights due to right and left hand driving?

The LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlights were designed according to the European car model of VW. This means that local adaptions of the manufacturers may have an impact on the functionality of the LEDriving XENARC Golf VI headlights.
