OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is expanding the product portfolio for Near-infrared spectroscopy. Near-infrared spectroscopy enables such things as the water, fat, sugar and protein content of food to be measured. This technology uses the characteristic absorption behavior of certain molecular compounds.
How does it work?

This technology uses the characteristic absorption behavior of certain molecular compounds. If a defined light spectrum is directed at a sample it is possible to determine the presence and quantity of certain ingredients from the wavelength distribution of the reflected light. An IRED, such as the
SFH 4735, SFH 4736 or SFH 4776, acts as a compact light source for the spectrometer.

The basis of the SFH 4735, SFH 4736 and SFH 4776 is a blue 1 mm² chip in UX:3 technology. Its light is converted into infrared radiation with the aid of a phosphor converter developed specifically for this application. A residual blue component in the light helps users target the area they want to investigate. The emission spectrum of the SFH 4735, SFH 4736 and SFH 4776 has a homogeneous spectral distribution in the infrared range from 650 nm to 1050 nm. They are the first and only LEDs on the market with this broad spectral range in the near infrared regime.
The SFH 4735 is the proven and compact OSLON® Black Flat, where the package is characterized in particular by good thermal resistance.
By making improvements to the phosphor material and technology, developers at Osram Opto Semiconductors have succeeded in increasing the intensity of the light by an impressive 60 percent compared with the predecessor component. The SFH 4776 with the tiny and robust SYNIOS® P2720 package shows this impressive intensity improvement. For the customer this means an improved signal-to-noise ratio and therefore simpler analysis of food and medicines. The small package size qualifies the SFH 4776 to be integrated into space restricted applications, such as smartphones.
Our new OSLON® Black SFH 4736 has more than double the radiant intensity compared to OSLON® Black Flat. This is due to a new phosphor technology and integrated optics. The primary optics bundle 90 percent of the generated light within a beam angle of +/-40°, providing considerably more optical power per unit area on the target object – in other words focusing the light precisely where it is needed. As a result, more light is reflected to the spectrometer, leading to a stronger measured signal.
